21 December 2006 | Thailand, Bangkok
From Brisbane I flew to Phuket to meet Dimitry on the airport and have some relaxing days on the beach.
We spend a couple of day's in Phuket, but were glad to leave as we found out the beaches were full of tourist, at night big party's (old man with young Thai girls) and all so expensive (that is compare to other Asian country's and city's even in Thailand itself).
From Phuket we did do a one day trip on a boat to the James Bond islands and it was great. We first went to see caves and the island with a big rock coming out of the water were they filmed the movie Casino Royal. On the way we stopped a few times to go canoeing; that was also amazing!
From Phuket with a boat to Phipi; when we arrived there it was full of tourist, markets, divingschools, travelagents who try to sell you things, that kind of stuff (the kind of things we were not looking for). We found out that most hotels were full and they only had some places in cheap hotels (even the cheap ones were so expensive). At the end we slept in a hut next to a building place; so not much of a sleep.
With a boat to the other island were the movie The Beach was filmed.
After The Beach to Krabi where we hired a motorbike to see the beautiful environment and the amazingly caves. It was great to sit on a motorcycling and drive 120 on the highway (yes pretty fast indeed); you see so much that way of traveling and feel closer and more free (you can stop wherever you want to and go where you want to go) than with a bus or plane. We went to national parks with waterfalls and hot springs and to big caves.
We took a night bus (14 hours) to Bangkok were we spend the night to take the bus to Chiang Mai the next evening (12 hours). Tired afterwards we spend some days in Chiang Mai to see the night market and went bicycling in the city before we left on a 3 day's trekking.
The trekking trough the jungle was great! We walked from town to town and slept in huts were also the traditional tribes live. It was such a good experience to see how the local people/ tribes live and also sleep in a hut next to the river in the jungle yourself. We did an elephant trip, went to a waterfall and did bamboo rafting.
Back in Chiang Mai we were lucky because there was a big festival and events because of the kings 80th birthday (and the Thai people are crazy about there king; everywhere you look you'll see people with yellow or pink shirts with I love the King/Queen on it). There was a big parade with music and dressed up people and balloons with fire going high up in the air (it looked like thousands of bright orange stars in the air; beautiful)
From Chiang Mai to Pai; a real hippy town with a great and relaxing athomosfeer. Sleeping in a beautiful hut with terrace and hang mat in the middle of rice fields and the mountains with jungle in the back. With a rented motorcycle to see the elephants and had a swim and lunch in a hot spring in the back of a garden: what more can you ask for?!
Again we took a bus back to Chiang Mai to go to Sukhotai from there; the bus was really creapy: the chairs were loose and the aircon leaking (the other so called VIP bus it was even worse because we were sitting next to the toilet and it wasn't what you can call a nice smell; it really really stank). We only had one day because we had to go back to Bangkok to arrange our visa for Myamar (it would take 5 day's to get your visa) that was a pity I would have loved to stay in Pai and Sukhotai a bit longer.
In Sukhotai we went to these gorgeous ruins and temples with a bicycle trough the park (we made many nice pictures of Buddha statues including me sitting in front of a big tree).
Back in Bangkok; the big grouted crazy city to arrange the visa and in the end spending a few day's getting back the money from Dimitry's suite (which he bought after he found out it was all a big scamp and they ripped him of; you can imagine he wasn't very happy about that).
To the floating market: with a boat on the river and other boats coming towards you to sell all kinds of stuff they have. Even boats were they cook food for you and you can have your lunch/dinner. On the shore little shops were you can buy all that you want.
To the tiger temple were you can actually sit with and pad the tigers, yes real big dangerous tigers. You walked in a canyon were all the tigers were lying and could go and sit next to them to make pictures. Incredible beautiful and strong animals such a weird feeling sitting next to the tiger and feel his soft hair in your hands (so gentle and soft as if it's just a big nice cat; afterwards they were getting anxious and walking around moving heavily groaning than you know again that they are wild animals) In there were also a lot of other animals, such as dears, wild pigs and cows. We were lucky to also see monks with young baby tigers (so quit I would just take it with me as pet), because it was for a private photo shoot (we didn't care too much and couldn't resist taking some photo's ourselves).
The river kwai were so many people died just to build one bridge, interesting to see the museum and read about the history (too less time tough to read it all, guess I have to go back one day to do that)
From Bangkok we flew to Yangon; Myamar.
